We have these pages to bring you information and news of our village bell ringers.  The Tower Captain, Tony Manktelow, has news in the following pages.

The Bells of St. Mary’s Church, Bozeat

St. Mary’s Bozeat has a fine 16˝ cwt ring of six bells, tuned to the key of E (659 Hz).

The five original bells were tuned and rehung with all new fittings in 1947 by John Taylor Bellfounders Ltd. of Loughborough, in Leicestershire.  The peal was augmented to six in 1995; the new treble bell being hung by Whites of Appleton, Oxfordshire. At the same time, the ringing room was moved upstairs onto the first floor to give the church a new vestry area below.

The bells are rung for service on Sunday mornings between 08:30 and 09:15. Practice night is Thursdays (19:30 – 21:00). The view below of the west door to the church shows access to the vestry and stair to the ringing room.

Details of the bells:

The Treble – Weighs 5 cwt, 2 quarters and 10 lbs.  This is the newest bell in the tower.  It was cast in 1995 by John Taylor Bellfounders Ltd. of Loughborough, Leicestershire and was hung in the pit of the original ring of five’s treble by Whites of Appleton, Oxfordshire.

No 2 – Weighs 5 cwt, 2 quarters and 26 lbs.    It has a 32” diameter.  It was the former treble of the old ring of five and was cast in 1723 by Henry Penn, bellfounder, of Peterborough.  It was rehung in a new steel frame, above the old timber 5-bell frame, by Whites of Appleton, Oxfordshire in 1995.

No 3 – Weighs 7 cwt, 2 quarters and 12 lbs.  It was re-cast in 1884 by John Taylor, bellfounder, of Loughborough, Leicestershire after the original pre-reformation bell had become cracked.

No 4 – Weighs 9 cwt, 1 quarter and 5 lbs.  It has a 38” diameter. This is the oldest bell in the tower and was cast in 1605 by the Newcombe family of Leicester.
