a note from our Headmistress .....

.... first published in Bozeat Matters in September 2008

BOZEAT COMMUNITY PRIMARY SCHOOL

We rounded off the year's work celebrating the progress and achievements of all pupils throughout the school and presenting the termly Governors' Achievement Awards to pupils from each class for consistent performance and achievement in English, Mathematics, Science and ICT. We are particularly proud of our Year 2 and Year 6 pupils, who are subject to end of Key Stage national assessment. Their achievements are as follows:

Year 2 - Speaking and Listening 100%, Reading 95%, Writing 89%,  Maths 100%, Science 100%. Year 6 -English 87% (countering last year's 'dip' ),  Maths 93% ( a significant improvement, reversing a three year downward trend),   Science 93% (countering last year's 'dip' )
Depending on the number of children in the year group, each child can be 'worth' between 4%-10%.

We met, and in some cases exceeded, our aspirational targets. Improvements made to the children's curriculum experiences, particularly in the teaching of maths, are certainly paying dividends. We are further developing the curriculum this year through a more creative approach, enabling children to use skills and knowledge gained in English, Maths and Science lessons more effectively across all other subjects.

An end of term highlight without doubt was the End of Year Prom for the top two classes. Many thanks to everyone involved in making this such a successful event; staff, parents, Friends of Bozeat School, local businesses and most of all to the children themselves, whose sense of occasion matched their impeccable dress.

We are pleased to further promote our Healthy School status with two new initiatives this year. We have opened Bozeat Breakfast Club, providing good quality healthy food, friendly well qualified staff and a caring environment for pupils attending the school or Bozeat Pre-School. There will be occasional themed breakfasts to mark festivals, celebrations or other events or to promote aspects of the work of the school. An example of this will be on Monday 13th October when all Year 5 and 6 children will be invited to join school staff and external professionals for breakfast prior to spending the morning planning a community health and wellbeing event to be held on Wednesday 22nd October.  All Bozeat residents are welcome to attend this event, look out for posters in the Spar and Paper Shop nearer the time. We have also reviewed the school food and drink policy and introduced a healthy tuck shop selling fruit and a variety of other healthy items. This is a self-financing initiative to promote awareness of healthy eating and extend existing good practice in Pre-School, Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1.

Work to replace the doors and windows is almost complete. The difference to both internal and external appearance is phenomenal. The workmen have been superb, working with minimal disruption to daily school routines. We shall miss them when they move on to their next job!

The library refurbishment is well underway and a grand reopening with a celebrity guest is planned to coincide with National Book Week between 6th-10th October. We are pleased the school building is being used for an increasing number of community group activities. Another date for your diary is Saturday 22nd November when 'A Tasting Guide to the Scottish Water of Life' will be held in the school hall. Refreshments will be available! Again, look for posters nearer the time.

Here's to another challenging but positive and successful year ahead. Thank you for your continuing interest and support.

BOZEAT PRE-SCHOOL PLAYGROUP

Lynne Collier 665536 (Chair)

We’ve had a wonderful summer with the children enjoying their new outside area at the school to the full.  We’ve had a tiger come to tea, learnt all the names of Harry’s bucketful of dinosaurs, visited the toy hospital with squirrel, got lost with the Bear, and celebrated with Kipper and Roly as the children explored some of their favourite storybooks.  They have also been harvesting and tasting the vegetables they planted in the spring.

On 24th July the pre-school organised and funded a teddy-bear’s picnic at the Playing Field, to which all Bozeat Under 5s and their families were invited. We were delighted to see so many people join us on such a lovely day and must thank Chris ‘Banana Brain’ and Julie who did sterling work to keep all the children (and adults) entertained. We hope you all enjoyed it as much as we did.

We are very fortunate to have the support of parents and other people in the village who kindly donate items, raise funds, provide help and give their time for our pre-school children. Can you help?  It is amazing what we can make use of – that huge cardboard box the TV came in for example, can make a wonderful boat/den/bus/ castle etc for a couple of days until it falls to pieces and then teaches about recycling. Thank you one and all, but especially Moira Roche, David Brown, Gordon Brannon and Graham Collier.

A very big welcome to all our new children this September term.  This will be the first time we have invited children from the age of 2 years 6 months to join us and we are looking forward to learning self-help skills, as well as sharing rhymes and fairy stories linking into Autumn and Harvest (including peas, beanstalks and enormous turnips).

Do watch out around the village for our fundraising events and don’t forget Santa’s sleigh which could be visiting your house this year! As we are a charity we make no profit and all proceeds from fundraising are used for the benefit of the children.

Friends of Bozeat School

Michelle Harrison - Chair

There has been a change in the hierarchy since the last Bozeat Matters, but the emphasis is still the same. We are still fundraising for the school, and work with the school to buy new equipment and some nice ‘extras’ for the children. Our main focus for this year has been the library, and we have a very dedicated sub committee that are working tirelessly on getting this in place for a re-launch in October. I can’t wait to see it.  Thank you at this point to Stars Hairdressers and Electrosite who have kindly provided some sponsorship towards this. Every bit helps!

There have also been lots of other smaller things that we have bought this year, such as the cooker and equipment. This has now been used by the some of the children to make healthy 3 course lunches and biscuits. Maybe we have some budding chefs? We are collecting Flora ‘Cooking With Schools’ tokens, so please pass them on if you have any, so that further equipment can be purchased.

Finally, just a note about some of the fun that we had in the final half term. Following the success of the Underwood Cup Football tournament at the school, we have now had the first year of the annual Rounders tournament where the winning team claimed ‘Cup 08’. Thank you to all the lunchtime supervisors for captaining teams, which may have been beyond the call of duty! You did help the children have loads of fun though!

We also had a great Fashion Show and thank you to all those children who modelled. The staff from Kids on the Catwalk thought that you were great, and remarked on how hard you worked and how nice you all were.

We then wrapped up the year by having a Barn Dance on the final weekend of the term, and it was great to see staff, governors, parents and children all letting their hair down. The school was transformed with bunting and hay bales, and so many people attended I was getting worried it would be standing room only. Anyway, it couldn’t have gone any better, apart from maybe being a few degrees warmer! Thanks to all the helpers that made it possible……..there has been much call for another one!!
